I have worked in affordable housing in England since 2007, and over the last 17 years have had personal and in-depth experience of:

  • Labour’s response to the credit crunch and the mortgage rescue programme.
  • The coalition government’s (Conservative and Lib Dem) introduction of ‘affordable rent’ through the 2011/15 Affordable Homes Programme (AHP), along with the social to affordable rent conversion programme to support reduced grant rates.
  • The 2016/21 Shared ownership affordable homes programme (SOAHP) and the termination of grant funding for new rented housing.
  • The expansion of the section 106 programme to become the leading delivery channel of affordable housing.
  • The rent reduction programme from 2016 to 2020.
  • The consilidation and merger to housing associations to create large multi-billion pound organisations.
  • The growth of for-profit registered providers.
